Cast Members Collect James Caan Stories
By Louis B. Parks

Shooting ""Bottle Rocket'' was a nonstop education for first-time director Wes Anderson. He had directed friends in short films, but that didn't prepare him to direct James Caan. ""Tremendous intimidation,'' the director said of the experience, not without humor. ""Whenever you talk to him, he'll grab your arm, punch you in the arm, lean forward. He's really into karate.

"At first it's very scary. Also there's something about his eyes, the way he looks at you. There's something that feels a little bit insane. ''

Each Bottle Rocket cast member has his favorite Caan story.

Luke Wilson will never forget their first scene together, sitting on a bench.

"I was kind of nervous about it, and I stepped on (talked over) one of his lines. Wes' style (when a mistake happened) had been to just keep going, but Jim said, 'Cut. ' I kept talking and I looked at Wes and back at Jim, and he grabbed me by the shoulders and just (Anderson slaps his forehead) head-butts me. It was like, 'Listen up. ' ''

Andrew Wilson had a scene in which Caan grabs his thumb and twists it behind his back, causing him great pain. Wilson didn't have to fake the pain.

"It was not a stunt hold,'' Wilson said with a grin. "He had my wrist bent back at a strange angle, and it really did hurt. ''

Anderson added: "Jimmy kept saying, 'Try to get away. ' Andrew would try to get away, and Jimmy would hurt him. ''

But if there were any hard feelings, they all seem forgotten now. The young Texans are just glad Caan was in their film.

"It didn't feel like a real movie until James Caan came down,'' said writer Owen Wilson. ""That kind of validated it. ''
