Buffy pushed herself harder when she felt her lungs
beginning to
collapse,
but the screaming just seemed to be getting further
away. She had left
Willow behind long ago and was now on her own. She
searched the
surroundings
around her, noting nothing but grass and headstones as
far as she could
see.
Suddenly, the scream protruded through the earth
itself and the face of
a
girl burst through the soil... and then it was gone.
Buffy's face contorted and she ran over to where she
had seen the last
impressions of a helpless victim. What she found was
nothing but grass,
just
as if nothing had ever happened.
"Something you can't see... but it's there, love...
just have to find
it."
Spike's thickly accented voice danced sinisterly
against the Slayer's
pale
skin, and she fought back the urge to shudder.
Instead she turned quickly and glared down her former
lover. "In case
you
forgot, I'm not your love." The irritation radiated
from the Slayer, as
if
you could see the waves of heat emanating from her.
"Right, right. Well, it's been fun..." And with that,
Spike slipped
back
into the darkness, but not before clutching his head a
little, "Damn
thing's
been acting up..." He snarled and began to make his
way out into the
night.
"Buffy?" Willow's winded voice came rushing through
the graveyard. The
redhead was soon as the Slayer's side. "What
happened?" Willow asked,
seeing
the angry look on Buffy's face.
"Spike happened." Before Buffy could get sidetracked
with that, she
remembered the screams. "There was a girl, and she
disappeared into the
ground..." Buffy told her friend, and began to circle
the very spot she
had
seen the activity.
"What are you? Like an Olympian??" Alex's voice rang
through the two
girls'
ears.
"You let Bond follow you??" Buffy asked her friend.
Willow only shook her head. "Not guilty..."
"Listen, James... I can tell that you're on some
mission to find
something
or someone to 'inspect' but, word of the wise, these
aren't exactly the
parts you should be looking..." The Slayer's sarcasm
stung the man.
He smiled ruefully and shot back, "That's not what
I've heard. Slayer,
right?" Alex tried to calm his nerves, he knew it was
not in his
mission
statement to approach or even acknowledge the Slayer,
but from where he
was
standing that option didn't seem so bad.
Buffy's hackles rose, as she reached for her stake.
"Who are you?" She
asked
as she pointed the wooden weapon at Alex.
Alex raised his hands in defense. "It's not so much
who I am, but who
they
are. And I think you are gonna want to know." With
that he began to
back
away.
Buffy looked at Willow who only shrugged, but she put
her stake away
and
crossed her arms against her chest.
"I'm listening."
~~~~~
Alex had led the girls back to the warehouse and
pulled open the rusty
door.
"Hey, an easier entrance!" He exclaimed as the rusted
metal panels
ground
away at each other.
Buffy winced, as did Willow as Alex pried the door
open. "Nice little
warehouse in the sky, you got here." Buffy noted,
sarcasm once again
dripping thickly. Willow only smiled generously at the
obviously
frivolous
man.
"Hey it's not a condo on the beach, but it'll serve...
That's not
what's
important." Alex stopped the mindless banter and ran
over to where his
car
was parked. He then proceeded to unload equipment of
all kinds, a
portable
lap top with a cable that attached to the lighter
plug-in, something
that
looked like a high-tech cell phone with a mobile
screen and ear-piece
and a
box filled to the top with papers.
"And here I was thinkin' you were only pretending to
be a Bond wannabe.
pretending meaning, bordering on obsessive, psychotic
almost-get-yourself-killed Bond wannabe." Buffy walked
over to Alex,
with
Willow close by her side.
Alex ignored the sarcastic Slayer and began to log
onto his computer an
access his files. "You ain't seen nothing yet. Too bad
ol' Carlos isn't
around to check out all my new gadgets." Alex mumbled
under his breath
and
smirked at himself. "Ok, down to business."
Alex clicked around on his lap top until he seemed
satisfied, he then
turned
the gelatin screen so it was facing the other two.
What Buffy saw
shocked
her and she actually had to remind herself to breathe.
"Riley."
