DIGNAN Bottle Rocket

Title: Escape From Wasco - Chapter 2
Author: JoJo
Type: Bottle Rocket
Genre: Drama/Crime
Disclaimer: I do not own any characters from Bottle Rocket nor am I afflicted with the movie, producers, directors, actors/actresses, ect. And no, I'm not related to Baby-Face Nelson either (Whom I also don't own)! Although that would be really cool if I was! Also, I have no accurate information on what prison is like these days, all I have is "The Green Mile" by Stephen King to rely on and that is in the 1930's so please bare with me!
P/L: Welcome to Wasco State Penitentiary, home to the criminals and murderers of C block. When Dignan is moved away from his old cell and cellmate he is placed in a new block and becomes friends with his new cellmate who's past is quite disturbing…not to mention his/her plans for the future!

Dignan looked around outside and smiled. He had almost forgotten what fresh air smelt like. It was very cold, but that didn't matter. He was at least glad that they didn't have to work today. He wasn't good at any of the sports that most of the other prisoners were doing so he decided to situate himself on one of the metal benches and watch. He looked up at the windows and wondered if Vicki would be in one of the rooms. He knew that even if she was in one, he wouldn't see her but that was fine with him. It was nice just to believe and hope that she isn't sick. It was strange how he felt when he saw her like that. It was strange even when he first saw her. Did everyone find her eyes that captivating?

It made him wonder how Anthony felt when he first saw Inés. But before his thinking got any deeper her felt a strong hand plop down on her shoulder and squeeze it tightly. Dignan winced and looked over at the large hand noticing one major detail: it was black. He looked back and faked a smile. "Hi there Steel. How are you doing today?"

"As good as Christmas can make it."

With that he walked over and sat next to Dignan. He then looked over at him and in his deep voice told him, "Y'know? I don't believe I ever got your name."

"It's Dignan."

Steel gave a chuckle, "Dignan, what a strange name. What gave your parents the idea to name you that?"

Dignan faked a laugh considering that he didn't want to get beat up and told him he didn't know. Steel looked down at the ground and let his chuckles slowly fade away. Dignan realized that the large man wasn't trying to calm down from his joke but instead; he was fighting from wanting to cry.

"Every Christmas they seem to make you wish for home. They let your family and friends write to you and you get to hear how their life's doing. I have a wife and two kids and she's always telling me how they're growing to be so big and how they still buy me Christmas presents. They hope that when I get out I'll be able to open them all. What about you?"

Dignan was surprised that such a tough man could seem so meek. Also that he could sound so kind in that deep and gruff voice. "I got my parents and two friends. That's about it."

"You've also got Vicki."

"What?"

"I've been here longer than Vicki has, I saw her being first thrown in her cell. And let me tell you something. I've never seen her be nice to any one."

"Really?"

"Yea. She's always been immature and impolite to people, but not you. Not to mention apologize." Someone then called out to Steel in the distance. They wanted to play a football game and needed him. He stood up and shook Dignan's hand, "Be glad you won't have to stay here for long, Dignan." With that he was gone.

Vicki typed vigorously on the computer in the room accessing secret files. She was always good at hacking into things, every since she was a little thing. Dignan Chase, she thought to herself as she typed it in, where are your mug shots? She needed that picture to make a fake I.D. and log it in the list of officers. Aha! There you are! She clicked the photo that would work on an I.D. and did some more typing. A box popped up for registration. The first thing to put in was a name. Hmmm, Drew… Her thoughts faded away though.

His picture was up at the top right corner. She fought laughing since the security camera was made to look for sound just incase someone placed a picture on it like she did. Dignan was the only person in the history of Wasco that smiled for his mug shot. He really wasn't criminal material, she knew that. But he can dream and maybe one day he would become as sly as her. She smiled. He has a nice hot smile… But she noticed something as she was brought back to what she was doing. Oh no! She quickly tried to bring the box back up for name but it didn't let her. She had been typing without thinking, and had given Dignan a last name she didn't mean to. Great! She sighed in her head. Might as well continue on with business…

She typed some more and brought up the agendas file. Another box popped up and she read the one word she hated most in hacking into stuff. Password. She typed in something and clicked okay. The box disappeared and she saw the computer start searching for something. First try! Ain't this a lucky day? But instead the password box popped up again.

She read what it had to say. Sorry, this password is invalid, please try again. She made a mocking face and tried again. It didn't work. She tried another. Failed. She did it again. Please try again. Argh! That saying is really getting on my nerves! She looked down at the computer clock. Fifteen minutes had passed already. How patient is that officer? She replied that thought with a worried face. She doesn't have enough time!

The officer waited patiently outside the girls bathroom while occupying himself by rocking on his heels and hitting his head (softly) on the wall and counting the tiles in the ceiling. How long does it take her to throw-up? He wondered. He checked his watch. It'd been fifteen minutes already! What if she'd already found a way to escape! He knew he should've accompanied her! He quickly changed his relaxed position to a more alert mode. With his hand placed on his walkie-talkie, he turned towards the bathroom door and when charging inside. In there he began to look around.

He didn't see any trace of Vicki in here! Oh man, I blew it this time! He told himself. He raised his walkie-talkie to his lips and began to push the talk button when he turned around toward the sink-

-And there was Vicki, letting the faucet run while she washed and rubbed her face. She looked up. The officer lowered the walkie-talkie and placed it in his pocket. "Forgot what you were doing?" She mocked. "Shut up." He replied.

"I just needed to wash my face and mouth. That throw-up tastes horrible!"

"Glad your feeling better," He sarcastically replied.

She smiled, "Me too!"

The officer quickly reached out and firmly grabbed her arm. "Since you're feeling better, let's get back to your cell."

"Well! Someone's in a hurry!"

Dignan happily walked up with the rest of the prisoners to C block. He ended up playing a football game and he was no good. He was constantly being attacked and he never scored a goal. Close to the end of the game people stopped giving him the ball. But that was fine with him, defense was better. It'd be even better if he could bring down a person.

He painfully watched Cowley unlock his bared door and slid it open. Then he got the usual push into his room. Only this time he was so tired that he didn't catch himself as he fell forward and collapsed onto his bed. It hurt even to lie down. Dignan could've sworn that his whole body was sore with bruises to match. It was almost like the one time he got in a fight with a Mexican when playing pool. The Mexican had pushed one of the balls in to a hole but when Dignan pointed it out the guy denied it. So they got in this big argument and before you know it the guy just reels back and punches him!

Dignan could almost feel the pain back in his lip for that. Vicki hurried over to him and looked at his face. "What happened?" she asked, then lifted her slender hand and rubbed her thumb on a bump right above his eyebrow. He closed his eyes wishing that it wasn't a sore bump she had placed her soft skin on then let out a soft, "Ow!"

She quickly moved her hand, "Sorry."

"That's ok. I played football with some of the guys and they played a little rough."

"Aw, pobrecito." She told him sarcastically.

"What?"

"It's poor thing in Spanish."

"You know Spanish?"

"Yeah, I know seven languages, was this Cowley's fault?"

"No."

"Oh, well, I'll get onto him anyway."-She walked over to the bars and yelled out to Cowley-"Hey, Cow! Yeah I'm talking to you! What are you doing letting your prisoners get beat up? You're supposed to protect the innocent stupid!"

She turned around and walked back to Dignan, ignoring Cowley's reply. "Why'd you do that?" Dignan asked remembering what Steel had told him. "'Cause, I hate Cowley and enjoy any chance I get to make him mad. He wasn't related to him but a g-man named Cowley shot down Big George. So I believe it's meant to be for this Nelson to hate this Cowley."

Dignan nodded understandingly. "And for this Nelson to work with this Chase right?"

She gave that mischievous smile and nodded, "Yep!"

Dignan smiled also, though even that hurt. It quickly turned into a wince. "What? Where does it hurt?" She asked. He looked over at her with a look that showing it was a stupid question, "Everywhere." She sighed and gave a look showing that was a stupid answer. "No I mean on your face." Without a reply she brought her hand out again and placed her index finger on the skin right next to his mouth. He winced as she pressed on it. Removing her finger she brought her face closer to his and gave a thorough inspection of the sore spot. She noticed a small scratch. "You've gotten cut by a blade of grass."

"How can a blade of grass hurt that bad?"

"Believe me, it can."

Once again they faced that awkward silence, just staring at each other. Only this time, their faces were so close that if Dignan wanted, he didn't have to lean too far forward to kiss her. He resisted the urge though. Mostly because he was too sore to move. Once again, he thought of Anthony and Inés. How'd Anthony get close to her? Did they like each other straight off?

Dignan forgot about all that soon enough though. Vicki looked out into the hall and saw that the time on the block clock was about 11:55. She looked back at Dignan, "Well, time to go to bed. And look at it this way, we're one step closer to our goal." Dignan smiled and began to say yes when the unexpected happened. Once she stood up, Vicki leaned forward and quickly kissed him on his forehead, where his sore bump was. The strange thing about it though, was that it didn't hurt him this time. Or maybe it did, it was just that Dignan was too excited to realize it.

As she leaned back he noticed her face was bright red, "Sweet dreams." With that she rubbed the top of his head and went over to her bed and tucked herself in. "Y-You too." He managed out. He felt the great pain of his grass cut again. He couldn't stop smiling this time though; he'd gotten the Christmas surprise that he wanted.

Before Dignan realized it, the days passed by and he found it already halfway through January. Sadly for him, there weren't anymore romantic issues between him and Vicki. She never did anything else besides that one kiss. But he hoped that would change after today; today Anthony was coming. And hopefully he could get some tips.

Dignan waited patiently with his head lowered next to Vicki and the rest of the Wasco C Block. It was a familiar scene for him. It was the same as when Anthony first visited him, that time with Bob. There they all were, lined up against the wall with an officer standing guard and the door for visitors just waiting to be opened. And when it did, there stood Anthony, Grace, and Inés.

Dignan was surprised when he saw them; they'd changed so much since he'd last seen them. Grace had gotten taller and when Inés spoke she sounded perfectly American. "Hello Jerry," She said with a smile. "Hey there Inés, well, I guess to start off with the truth, my name's not Jerry, it's Dignan." She confusingly looked at him as all five of them walked outside towards a bench right in front of their broken down basketball court. "How's it going Dignan?" Anthony asked shaking his hand, which turned into a hug. "Fine. You?" he replied.

"Good."

Dignan turned toward Grace. "And how are you Grace?" She looked at him, "Good. When are you getting out of here, Dignan?" He smiled, "Soon. Very soon." Grace looked at him doubtfully, "I don't like the way that sounds. You're not going to escape are you?"

Dignan worriedly looked back at Vicki, who showed no reply of expression. In a way, that answered his question by itself, don't tell. Dignan turned back to Grace and rubbed the top of her head, "You don't have very much faith in your ol' pal Dignan do you?"

"No, not really."

Dignan looked over at Anthony and muttered, "Who died and made her Sherlock?" Anthony shrugged, "Hey, it's you were talking about here." Dignan glared at him. He heard Vicki stifle a chuckle. "Well, I'd like for you all to meet someone," He told them and motioned for Vicki to step forward, "This is my cell mate, Vicki Nelson." She smiled, "Hey there." With that she shook hands with everyone.

Anthony looked at Dignan confusingly, "But last time I visited you you were cell mates with a guy named Carlos or something like that."

"It's Carl. Yeah, he was for a while but we had a cell exchange."

Grace looked at Vicki, "You're not from around here are you?"

"No not really. I was born in Chicago."

"So, how'd you get in here?"

Vicki chuckled, "Curious little squirt aren't cha?"-She looked over at Inés and smiled-"How are you? I don't believe I've heard much from you…"

Dignan and Anthony watched as the girls engaged into conversation. And as that happened, they moved off to give some distance to where they could talk privately. Dignan stared and smiled as he saw Vicki's angelic face bring a smile as she listened to Inés speak. Anthony chuckled, "You like her don't you?"

"What? Huh? No, I-I was just looking at how much Grace has grown. Wow, how old is she now?"

"It's alright Dignan. You know how I feel now don't you?"

Dignan smiled and sighed. "Yeah, I guess I do. Well, I've been wondering, how'd you and Inés hit it off?"

"How'd we hit it off? Uh, well, it's just she came to clean my room one day and I decided to help her with it. Before I knew it I was helping her clean every room in the motel. See, what you've got to do is you just can't sit back and wait for her to say she likes you, you've got to be more persistent and let her know that you like her. A lot of times girls are afraid to get turned down or embarrassed so they decide to wait for that guy to say they like them and then they'll confess."

"How do you know so much about this?"

"Hey, I have a little sister to tell me about her problems."

"That makes sense. Nice observation."

"Thanks."

"Speaking of you and Inés, how is your relationship?"

"It's really good. I'm still deciding if I should pop the question though."

Dignan smiled and play punched Anthony in the arm, "You charmer you! She's probably wishing you would ask her."

"You think so?"

"Of course! But,"-He looked down at the ground-"how would a married man feel about joining back up with Dignan and beginning another gang?"

"Oh come on, don't tell me prison hasn't effected you any?"

"I believe it has. Have you heard some of these guy's stories? Pure genius! I can take some notes and before you know it we'll be on the Most Wanted's number one list!"

"Dignan, crime doesn't pay. And the more I do any of that stuff, it just makes more sense that it's wrong."

"Well, at least tell me you'll think about it."

"Alright, alright. I'll think about it."

The ringing of a bell echoed out through the vast penitentiary. Dignan looked over at Anthony sadly, "Time's up." They then walked over to the girls, which were now just Inés and Grace. Vicki had already begun walking over to the line of prisoners after saying good-bye. "Well," Dignan told them, "Glad you came. It's nice to see familiar faces every now and then."

"It was nice to see you too-Dignan," Inés told him.

Grace watched Vicki walk off for a minute, then leaned in toward Dignan and whispered, "I don't trust that girl, Dignan. I think she's only going to be trouble. She's from Chicago and that's where most gangsters come from."

"Y'know, you have a bad habit of stereotyping," Dignan told her, "She's an alright girl. Just got put in jail for the same reason I did-kind of. So don't worry."

She gave a weak smile, "Alright."

And with that Dignan ran off to catch up with Vicki. As he did he looked back and waved a final good-bye.

Dignan thought about Anthony's advice for a while sitting there in his C block cell. When he looked over at Vicki he noticed she was doing about the same thing. She gave a soft laugh and looked over him, "That Grace is a cute kid…in an annoying way."

"Yeah, I think she's just reached that stage in life where she thinks she knows everything."

"She kind of reminds me of me. Except when I was asking about everything I was trying to get information to develop a good robbery."

"But I doubt Grace would ever become a criminal. She's too busy with her morals to get into the law."

Vicki smiled. "True."

Dignan shifted his eyes down toward the floor and bit his lip. He knew sometime he should let his feelings out, but it was so tough. He'd never really been one of those guys that was a chick magnet. "Vicki, I've been wanting to tell you something…uh…well, you're…I-"

"Is it just when you're around me that you find it tough to say stuff or have you always had a little bit of a stutter?"

"I…uh…"-Dignan winced, he couldn't do it-"You're one of the most brilliant criminals I've ever hung out with."

"Come on Dignan, tell me something I don't know."

Before he could control it, the words flew out of his mouth, "You're hot."

She raised one eyebrow in confusion, "What?"

"I mean, uh, you must be hot in here. I know I am. Man, what is the temperature anyway?" He unbuttoned the first three buttons to his uniform.

"Dignan," she told him matter-of-factly, "it's only sixty degrees."

"Oh, well, maybe it's just me."

She laughed.

"Y'know, I don't believe I've ever had a cell mate as entertaining as you."

"Really?" Dignan smiled.

"Really. It sure feels nice to laugh again. With what I've been through, I could've sworn that I would never laugh."

"Exactly what'd you do that was so bad?"

"I really don't want to talk about it."

"Y'know, I don't believe we can have a good partnership if we're not open with each other."

She smiled, "I agree wholeheartedly."

Dignan looked away. He hated it when people would turn his words around.

Vicki chuckled, and when he looked up he saw her eyes glisten. "Vicki, what's wrong?"

She wiped her eyes with her palm and faked a smile. "Nothing. I'm just sleepy."

"Are you sure?"

"Dignan, really, I'm fine. Let's just get some sleep."

"Alright."

Although he didn't believe her, Dignan decided to let her have it her way. He knew she was hiding something though, something that stung and hurt her bad. And he knew it must've been what made her sentence longer, even if he didn't do the same thing as she did. He was sure of it after that, since after all, he could hear her crying all night.

* * *

The days flew by and before it seemed real, it was February the 26th. One day in advance to their "Big getaway" as Vicki liked to put it. They had just gotten back from supper and both were feeling anxious and nervous. Vicki paced back and forth, her arms folded behind her back. Dignan sat on his cot with his fingers interlocked and his chin resting on them. He watched her continue to walk back and forth; he knew that tonight was the best of any time to tell her his feelings. He couldn't back away now, not after he'd planned on what to say for weeks.

Vicki walked over to the cell bars and clasped her hands around them. She peered over at the desk where Cowley usually sat to make sure he couldn't see her acting like she was. If he did she was sure he could figure that they were planning something. Seeing no one there she went back to pacing. "Y'know, if you do that long enough you could wear down the floor to where there's a hole in it." Dignan told her. She stopped and sat down on her bed, "I can't help it. I've got those jitters where you just can't stand still." Her leg began to bounce.

"What's there to be worried about?"

"Getting caught."

"Oh."

"Believe me, you don't want to get caught. Those officers aren't easy when it comes to punishment."

"You're telling me! When I was arrested the police beat the crap out of me and then threw me into jail."

Vicki chuckled then looked down at the ground, her expression changed in deep concentration, just like when they first met.

"Hey Vicki? There's something I want to tell you."

She looked up, "Hmm?"

"Do you remember the first day I came here, I told you I was in here for robbing the McConnigan bank?"-He took a deep sigh-"Well, I lied."

"I know. Hinckley Cold Storage."

"What? How?"

"When I registered you in here I looked at your profile."

"Oh."

Vicki looked down, deeply contemplating on if she should say something or not. She looked back up at Dignan with watery eyes.

He looked at her worriedly, "Vicki, what's wrong?"

Her voice was weak when she talked, "Have you ever held a tommy gun? Y'know, when it was fully loaded and you could feel the cold weight in your hands. When that though comes to your mind that all you have to do is tighten your finger…" Her voice trailed away.

Dignan worriedly looked at her. Maybe he was wrong when he though Vicki wasn't a mad killer like her great-grandgangster. He got up and sat down next to her on her cot. "What are you talking about?"

"Why I'm in here, Dignan."-She fought the tears from coming-"I've never told anyone about it."

"What do you mean? You robbed a bank."

"No!"-She stuck her hands out in front of her, turning them palms up and back forward as if inspecting them of betrayal then ran them through her hair-"I'm cursed. No one but the officers and Steel knows I am. They won't let me near a gun. See, Big George's gun-happy genes have been passed onto me and…and whenever a gun is in reach and in my hands, I become a different person. I mean, you just gotta pull the trigger right? Won't hurt. I try to fight the urge but it's just like dealing with a drug addiction. Sometimes I win and sometimes I loose.

"My gang members knew that too, the one night we decided to pull that big heist. Like I've told you, they never wanted to be in the team, they just wanted to have some fun."-Vicki cringed as she took a deep breath as if every word hurt her deep inside. She could see the scene reenact before her eyes. The sound of a gun firing, the painful screams-"So to get rid of me, just as we were running from the coppers, Capone hands me a tommy gun and smiles. 'Come on Nelson, we need a distraction to get this loot back to our hideout.' He told me. I worriedly looked up at him, my eyes pleading. 'You can do it,' he assured.

"And then I could tell the effect began to work on me. I smiled and said, 'If you want a distraction, you'll get one!' I began to run the opposite way without realizing they were running off to a place nowhere near the hide out. I didn't care though; I had a gun in my hands and was ready for some action. I jumped out in front of the officers in attack position. 'Drop you weapon' they told me with all their guns raised. 'This weapon?' I smarted and then I felt my fingers tighten on the trigger…"-She wiped a tear from her eye-"I gunned and killed all twenty of the officers that were out there."

Dignan was shocked. And if it was right to say it, he was also terrified. Could this be the Vicki that was so smart and cunning that he loved? Did he even still love her?

"Do you understand why I never told anyone?"

Dignan nodded.

She looked down at the ground, "It's alright. I wouldn't blame you if you do think I'm a mad person. It's nothing new. I wouldn't even be surprised if you want us to never see each other after our escape."

Dignan looked at her aggravated, "What are you talking about? I don't want to ever hear you say that! Hey, look at me"-She looked over at him with sad eyes-"You are no mad person."

She weakly smiled. "And if anyone ever says so I'll personally beat the living crap out of them!" He continued.

Vicki laughed and then shockingly, leaned forward and hugged him. Dignan felt a smile come across his face. "Thanks," She told him. And as she pulled away she gave him a small kiss on the cheek. He sighed with the smile still across his face, "Hey, what can I say? Chase would never desert his ol' pal Nelson would he?"

"No I guess not."-She chuckled-"I'm glad I didn't stick to the original plan."

"What was that?"

"Kick you out as soon as we exited the jail gates. But that was before I knew that I could trust you. And…before I began liking you."

Dignan looked at her in amazement. "You mean you like me? Like, think I'm good looking and all that stuff?"

Vicki shyly smiled, "Yea."

Dignan found himself speechless, an ear-to-ear smile was on his face as he tried to talk. He then pumped his arm and excitedly let out a, "Yes!"

Vicki laughed.

"You don't know how long I've been trying to tell you the same thing," he told her.

"Oh, I knew."

"What?"

She chuckled, "You're so cute when you're excited about something. But really, I've been around so many different characters that I can read body language pretty well."

"You know just about everything don't you?" He asked her beginning to wrap his arms around her.

"What do you mean 'just about everything'? I know all!" She then leaned forward and kissed him. Dignan felt excitement rush over him; this was actually his first meaningful kiss! Who could've ever imagined that a mastermind gangster like Vicki could have so much passion? They slowly pulled away from each other. Vicki was slightly blushing when she looked back at him. He knew that it was probably because she was new to the whole "love" thing.

"Wow," She said in awe, "for once I feel all warm inside. I guess that's what comes when you are loved."-Dignan noticed how for once, Vicki seemed like a soft and fragile young woman, she had finally set down her tough impenetrable shield-"It's been so long since I've been loved…"

"I can't see how," Dignan replied realizing he was acting differently also. He didn't care though, that seems like what love does to you anyway. He came forward and began to pursue another kiss, but this one didn't seem to be as emotional as the first one. She quickly pulled away and he began to see the old Vicki again. Her shield was raised and ready to block off any emotion of others, "We really shouldn't be doing this."

"What? Why not?"

"If we get caught then Cowley will immediately separate us. And that's not good for our plans."

"But Cowley's nowhere near here!"

A voice came behind Vicki, "Guess again."

Dignan and Vicki both quickly turned around. There stood Cowley with a devilish grin across his face. "What plans Vicki? Don't tell me another escape?" He bellowed in mocking laughter. Vicki gave him a deadly glare and this time, Dignan knew she most likely would've leaped forward and choked or shot Cowley. He wouldn't blame her, he probably would too if it didn't give him extra years in jail. "What are you doing here anyway?" She demanded. "It's bedtime for you scum, and luckily I got here before anything happened," Cowley cruelly joked, "I would hate for dogs like you to breed in jail."

Too bad, Dignan thought. He looked over at Vicki and worriedly realized her hands were turning white from clenching with rage. And without notice, she sprung forward and extended her arms through the bars. Cowley tried to jump back but he wasn't quick enough. She grabbed him by the shoulders, then turning him around, pinned him to the cold metal with her arm wrapped around his neck in a choking fashion. Cowley struggled to free himself but despite Vicki's pettiness, she was one strong woman. She gave him an evil grin and whispered in his ear, "Y'know? I could probably kill you five different ways like this."

Cowley swallowed nervously, "I'll call for the other officers to contact the warrant! I'll make sure you get put on death row!"

"If you utter so much as one syllable of the word 'help' I swear I'll begin to kill you in such a slow process you would've wished that you were never born."

Dignan fearfully watched as Vicki threatened the officer. He'd never seen this side of her before. Wow, today I've found out so much about her emotions, he mused. Even though he didn't like the thought of Vicki being put on death row, Dignan found this rather amusing despite his fear for the officer. Vicki seemed to be some well-trained assassin. He never really felt terrified though, not until he saw that mad gleam in her mysterious blue eyes.

Then he saw her reach for Cowley's gun. On an impulse, he jumped forward and pulled Vicki off the officer. She slightly knocked the air out of him as she landed on top of Dignan collapsing to the ground. When Cowley turned around, Dignan noticed that his face was a nice dark color of purple. "Thanks Chase," He told him, "You really saved my life. For that I'll give you a tip."

"Really?" Dignan smiled wondering how much money he was going to get.

"Stay away from vicious vipers like her and you'll live longer." Cowley chuckled at the joke and headed into his office.

Dignan rolled his eyes and gave an annoyed sigh.

"What were you thinking?" Vicki angrily asked him quickly standing up.

"What do you mean? You were about to kill him!"

"So? We could've made our escape tonight and have been together. Now, now our whole plan is ruined and the next escape plan I make I'll have to leave you behind. And you're a nice guy, Dignan. I'd hate to do that to you."

Dignan looked hurt. What does she mean, "I'll have to leave you behind"? I though she loved me, the thoughts raced through his mind. Cowley walked back over to their cell with a smile. "Better say your good-byes," He told them, "I called the warrant and you'll be moving back to A block, Chase. As for you Nelson"-He gave an evil chuckle-"You'll be spending the night in your favorite room." He held up a white straight jacket and Vicki knew he meant the padded room. She hated it in there. Of course, Cowley would have to wait for the other officers to arrive. It was against the rulebook for an officer to put a straight jacket on a prisoner without supervision.

Vicki glared at him. A crooked smile crossed her face and she faked a lunge at the officer. Cowley worriedly jumped back and tripped, falling to the ground. Vicki gave an evil laugh. "Not only are you a dumb cow," she mocked, "You're a 'fraidy-cat also! What a combination!"

Cowley grumbled something and them walked into his office. As Vicki walked back to her bunk her smile vanished and she glared over at Dignan also. It was nerve-racking to see her look at him like that. Like she was ready to kill him. "Look, I know I messed up but I can't help it! You were acting mad!"

Vicki looked hurt, "I looked mad? Just a few minutes ago you said that I wasn't like that."-A disappointing grin came across her face-"Oh I see, you decided to lie so you could get on my good side. You can't hide your thoughts Dignan, and that is really low."
