Chris had been staying with Lucy for 7 weeks now. Going back to the Navy was far from his mind. He was enjoying the rest even more so since he and Lucy got together.
Chris had gone to stay with his parents for a few days. He didn't want to leave Lucy but she insisted he went and she promised to make it up to him when he returned.
Two days before Chris was due back Lucy didn't feel well. She took the day off work and went home to have a rest.
She felt nauseous "just a bug" she thought.
Later that day Lucy went through her diary and noticed that her period was 6 days late. "Oh no" she whispered to herself.
She went to a drugstore and bought a pregnancy test kit.
After pacing around her bathroom for what seemed like an hour, Lucy did the test. Now all she had to do was wait. Minutes seemed like hours, the longest in her life.
Lucy stared at the stick in front of her "Oh no" she said aloud tears springing from her eyes.
She couldn't understand how it was possible. She always took her pill never missed a day and her periods had always been regular. Chris was home soon and Lucy was dreading it.

He got to Lucy's early in the afternoon. Lucy was sat in the garden reading (well, she had the book in her hands, she hadn't read a page).
"Well hello gorgeous. Where's my welcome home kiss?"
"Hey you" Lucy got up and put her arms around Chris. She was trying hard to hold back the tears that were already threatening to come. They kissed and Lucy held him tight.
"You alright?" he asked.
"Yeah, just missed you so much" she answered.
"So much that you wanna go upstairs?"
"Er no, I mean not yet. I've not been well and I'm still a little delicate."
"Yhy didn't you call me? I would have come back earlier."
"Oh it's nothing, stop fussing."
"Sorry."
Lucy knew there wasn't a right time to tell Chris but she had to do it soon.
That next morning at breakfast Lucy played with her cereal. Now was the time.
"Chris."
"Yeah."
"I..wanna talk to you and I urm don't know where to start."
"From the beginning, that usually helps."
"Chris, don't."
Lucy looked Chris straight in the eyes and said in a quiet voice "I'm pregnant."
The tears then flooded out of her eyes like a river bursting its banks. Lucy held her head in her hands and whispered over and over "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry".
She waited for his reaction....
