Chris Burnett ran, constantly glancing at his surroundings making sure he was not being followed. The air was cold and it bit at his skin; his throat burned each time he took a breath. The sky was blank and the only sounds to be heard were his feet stamping the earth and his deep breathes.
Suddenly he stopped in his tracks, muscles stiffened. He strained his ears and heard a soft sound coming from somewhere to his left. Slowly he crept through trees and searched for the source of the sound, careful to stay relatively hidden. Almost at once he had located where the sound had come from. On the ground, hugging her knees and bowing her head, sat a girl who couldn't have been more than eighteen years old. She was crying.
Chris edged closer to the girl. He was quite taken aback.
Where the hell did she come from?
He reached out his hand and gently touched her shoulder. The girl jumped, her head shot up and she looked at him with wide fearful eyes. She was rubbing her hands together nervously and slowly moving away from him. Obviously something very bad had happened to her.
Chris stepped closer to her and bent down so he was eye level with her. He put his hands on her shoulders and asked with a soft voice,"What happened to you?"
She trembled under his touch, but allowed herself to relax slightly when she realized he didn't mean to harm her. After a moment she took in a breath and spoke in a shakey voice,"T-they're looking for me."
Chris didn't have to ask who,"Why?"
"I-I saw them kill people. So many people..."
Chris wondered why this girl had witnessed what she had, she looked and talked like she was American, why would she be here? He didn't have time for questions now.
"We can't stay here. Come with me I'm going some where where we'll be safe," Chris stood and helped the girl to her feet. She would make things hard, she looked exhausted…and even if she wasn't he doubted she'd be able to keep up with him. But he couldn't just leave her behind.
Chris took her hand and started off again, slower than before but fast enough to be in a running pace. After an hour of running (a/n blek I can't run for ten minutes) the girl seemed to have regained some mental stability, but she was breathing hard from the running. Chris turned his head to her and saw she was struggling.
"Are you okay?," he said breaking the hour long silence.
She glanced at him and replied,"Yes."
Chris laughed inside, he could tell she was just keeping her pride,"So... what's your name?"
"Truth. What's yours?"
"That's an interesting name, mine's Chris."
"Where are we going?" Truth asked.
"To the safe zone. I'm a navy pilot and I've got people coming for me," Chris answered.
"Thank god."
