Owen : "Thanks for havin' me !"

Jay : "Great to see you again."

Owen : "It's great to be here. "

Jay : "Now tell me about - see I was a big fan of "I Spy" when I was a kid. But probably that's probably old generation - doesn't even know what this show...

Owen : "Yeah, it kind of missed me I didn't grow up watching it but aaahhh I don't think it was that important 'cause it's not very much like the original TV series which sort of kind of more Eddie plays this kind of aah boxer and I'm a spy who's tryin' to kind of get him to help us with this mission and stuff."

Jay: "Now how did you guys click ? Good ? Did you guys work out - was it fun ?..."

Owen : "Yyeah, it's always - I mean I was like a little bit nervous 'cause I grew up kind of seeing like aah, "Trading Places" and "48 Hours" and you get a little bit, gosh I wonder how we're going to get along and stuff. And aahmm I showed up - we started filming in Budapest and the first week Eddie and I are kind of sitting in a limo filming this scene where we get out to go into this party at a castle and that's kind of the moment like wow I wonder what we're going to talk about and stuff and Eddie's kind of looking out and there's these guards on horses and Eddie says ahh, "I wonder what horses think about." [ audience laughs ] And ahhh it was weird 'cause I was kind of looking at them too and I said, "I don't know, but they kind of make me nervous 'cause I'm not that comfortable around horses." And he was like, "Yeah me too I- but I thought you grew up in Texas and ahhmm and were in that Western stuff." I go, "Yeah but I grew up more in the city and in the Western it was like a stunt guy who did a lot of the riding and stuff and I said, "But don't you have a farm where you have a lot of horses ?" And he said, "Yeah, but they're more to kind of look at in the distance." [ audience laughs ]

Jay : Distant horses. Yeah.

Owen : "But you were talking about feeding them and stuff. He goes, "Well, it's more like take carrots and kind of throw 'em over the fence and stuff [ audience laughs ] so we kind of bonded over where we were both kind of freaked out by horses.

[ audience goes crazy - Eddie Murphy makes a surprise appearance - Eddie greets Jay and Owen ]

Owen : "What big surprise !" [ laughs under his breath ]

Jay : "I'm as surprised as you are !"

Eddie : "...[ inaudible - the audience is still going crazy ] how your interview was going."

Owen : "Yeah, thanks for supporting me. "

Jay : [ a little talking over each other ] "It was going good - he was talking about he was talkin' about horses he said you guys have a mutual fear of horses." [ Eddie and Owen arel talking at the same time as Jay - hard to hear I think Owen was trying to tell Eddie what he was just talking about with Jay]

Owen: "...Scared of 'em."

Eddie: "Oh yeah, yeah I don't like horses. [ audience laughs ] Let me take these off 'cause I probably look crazy in these." [ Takes his sunglasses off - audience goes crazy again - Eddie gives them an odd glance ]

Owen : [ inaudible since the audience is so loud ]"... John Lennon and Elvis 'cause you were like a big Elvis fan.

Eddie: "Oh yeah, a big, big Elvis fan."

[ audience cheers ]

Jay : "Did you have a favorite Elvis movie ?"

Eddie : " I like all of 'em."

Jay : "Yeah, yeah."

Eddie : "But I just like Elvis."

Owen : "He's cool - he's the king - there's no way of getting around it."

Eddie : "Yeah. "

Owen : "You had tickets for his last show."

Eddie : "Yeah, yeah he was comin' to the Nasa Coliseum..

Jay : "Is that right ? You saw Elivs...

[ They're all talking over each other - hard to write it out ]

Owen : "And your brother came out and told you, "Uh Eddie, I don't know why you're cuttin' the grass.."

[ All 3 still talking over each other ]

Eddie : "I grew up in an all black neighborhood you know so not a lot of Elvis fans and all but [ audience laughs ] and uuh Elvis was comin' to the Nasa Coliseum and I was like cuttin' grass [ inaudible - Jay said something ] savin' money to get tickets and my brother comes outside. [ says this in a thick Southern accent ] "You might as well stop cuttin' that grass, Elivs is gone!" [ audience laughs - Owen's under his breath laugh can be heard ] So that's how I found out."

Jay : "Oh man. Oh that's too bad - so you never saw 'im."

Eddie : "Never saw 'im."

Jay : "See that was a - that was - there were two people I wanted to meet in show business, Elvis Presley and Jack Benny Those were my two favorite. I..."

Eddie : "Wow, yeah, they're so similar". [ Jack Benny one of the first stand up comedians ] [ audience laughs as does Owen ]

Jay : "I know" [ says that over the audience reaction ] "In fact I got to Hollywood and I opened - I was here for like a week - and I opened the paper and Jack Benny died.

Eddie : "Oohh."

Jay : "And then a couple years later, Elvis died."

[ Owen and Eddie grumble their disappointment for Jay ]

Jay : "Yeah, they're my favorite."

Owen: " Gosh I'm so glad you showed up, man."

Eddie : "Yeah."

Owen : "..you got to do a lot of the heavy lifting kind of."

Eddie : "You guys just got into it, right ?"

Owen : " Yeah.."

Eddie : " I don't want to steal Owen's thunder."

Owen : "Take it, take it."

Eddie : "Well how long before you show the clip ?"

Jay : "We'll show the clip right now."

Eddie : " What is the clip of ? "

Jay : "Well you tell me. It seems you two did a movie."

[ audience laughs ]

Eddie : "Yeah, but I..."

Owen: [ talks over the audience ] " The clip is when ahh kinda like early on in the movie I'm kinda tryin' to get Eddie revved up about being a spy and on this mission I'm showing him some of the little gadgets and stuff."

Eddie : "Oh yeah, yeah..I remember that."

Owen : " That's where I give you this contact lens and it's got a little like aah it's a camera - when you put it in your eye and I put mine in my eye then you see what I'm seeing."

Eddie : "Yeah - you have a little thing that you put behind my ear and I can hear what he's saying."

Owen : "Yeah. "

Eddie : " So it kind it kind of pops up a couple of times in the movie."

[ talking over each other a little ]

Owen : " ...pumped up about the mission."

Jay : "Guys, that not the right clip.

[ they look confused ]

Jay : "That's not the clip we have though."

[ audience and Owen is heard laughing ]

Owen : "Oooh,, Ooh. That's what the lady back there told me. "

Jay : "No, no oh this is the "Sexual Healing" clip."

Owen : "Oh ! oh Oh ! you seen that ? Have you seen that ?"

[ a lot of talking over each other between the three ]

Eddie : "That's how he can hear me in the other room."

Owen : "Yeah."

Jay : " Okay, so you're giving him tips.."

Eddie : "Right, I can hear him - see everything he's doing - he's with a girl.."

Owen : "Yeah okay, but I know what this is. There's a girl who makes me kind of a little bit insecure 'cause I'm really into her she makes me really nervous and stuff - she's really pretty and Eddie's kind of like aah giving some like advice using this spy equipment.."

Eddie : [ interrupting ] "It's lucky 'cause my character has savue faire."

Owen : "Yeah !"

[audience and Owen laughs ]

Jay : "Take a look ! "I Spy" ! "

[ the clip is shown ]

Eddie : "Look in the eyes - in the eyes. [ sings " Baabyy, I woke up this mornin' and the sea was stormin' inside o' me [ whispers ] Say that. "

Owen : " [ says, not sings ] Baby, when I woke up this morning, I felt like there was this sea storming inside of me."

Eddie : " [ sings ] Inside o' me."

Owen : [ says not sings ] " Inside of me."

Eddie : [ sings ] "and baaby, I think I'm capsizing the waves are risin' and risin'."

Owen : [ says not sings ] " And baby,

[ girl giggles ]

Owen : "I think I'm capsizing. I think I'm capsizing [ his voice is getting higher ] The waves keep rising. "

Eddie : [ sings ] "Risin'"

Owen : [ says not sings ] "Risin'"

Eddie : [ sings ] "Risin'"

Owen : [ his voice is very high and is very nervous - says ] "Risin'"

[ the audience laughs ] [ girl in movie giggles ]

Eddie : [ sings ] "And when I get that feelin', I need sexual healin'.

Owen : [ his voice is still very nervous and his voice is cracking and gets higher ] " And when I get that feeling,.. I need [ tries to sing it ] sexual.. healin'.."

[ end of clip - the audience goes crazy ]

Jay : [ pats Owen on the shoulder and says, "Cute" I think under the audience's cheering ] "Cool ! Alright we need to take a break - can you stick around for another segment ?

Eddie : "Hey, I got 5 kids, I gotta get home to my wife... [ inaudible as the band starts playing and the audience begins cheering as he gets up to leave. ]

Jay : "Alright, when we come back [ more Owen Wilson I think he says. ]

[ back from commercial break ]

Jay : "Hey, I like that, that was from Bottle Rocket." [ wonder what Owen and Jay were discussing during the break.]

Owen : "Yeah when we came out.... [ inaudible as the crowd is still cheering from being back from the break ]

Jay : "We're talking with Owen Wilson - so now you did "I Spy" with director, Betty Thomas, an old friend of mine, I know Betty.

Owen : "Yeah, Betty's great, she was on ahh "Hill Street Blues" [ TV series in the 80s ] which I saw as a kid and she was great directing this."

Jay : "And she's a funny improve player too I always remember she's a good comic."

Owen : "Yeah, yeah, she was good at, you know, coming up with ideas and stuff for us on the set. "

Jay : "You guys got along okay ?"

Owen : "Yeah, she was good. She aahmm, she gave ahmm, I told her about this girl that I'd gone out with that I'd gotten her a humidifier for Christmas [ audience laughs ] And it was like a Disaster and I was we were somehow talking about bad presents and ahh so she got me a humidifier for my birthday [ audience laughs ] and a CD cleaner ahhm but I could've sworn that when I got that girl the humidifier, the week before we'd been talking about them about how great they are kind of - I think it was like dry out - and ahh [ audience laughs ] but I realized I was sort of leading the charge about how great they were and did not - it didn't go over well."

Jay : " No, but see - you haven't been married, have you ?"

Owen : "No, no I haven't."

Jay : "You, you don't know how it works. You're supposed to get the humidifier And a gift." [ audience laughs ]

Owen : " Yees, well I had the CD cleaner but when I saw the way the humidifier went over, I called an audible and I canceled the CD cleaner." [ audience laughs ]

Jay : [ laughs while saying,]"Yeah, yeah, ya can't... "

Owen : [ interrupting ] "Yeah, then I went for, ya know some more.."

Jay : [ interrupting ] " You can't give a practical thing.."

Owen : [ talking over Jay ] " Then I called my Dad - he gave me some good advice."

Jay : [ giggling kind heartedly ]

Owen : "My Dad's good at giving presents for my Mother."

Jay : "Now does he give good presents or prank presents ?"

Owen : "Reeally good - like they just had like ahm - like one of their wedding anniversaries and he got her this great photograph of Sinatra and my Mother's name is, Laura and on the aah the photograph you can see Sinatra singing a song called, "Laura". "

Jay : " Oh so see that's very clever."

[ One of them says it was cool - a little talking over each other ]

Owen : "Yeah a nice moving gift."

Jay : "My Dad would go home with like, "Look an electric broom !" [ audience laughs ] Ya know, like that kind of stuff." [ Owen laughs ]

Owen : "Oh I think we'd get along !" [ audience laughs ]

Jay : "Yeah, yeah, yeah, you two would hit it off pretty good."

Owen: "Yeah"

Jay : "That's right. [ smiling ] Now I saw the other night you were at the ahh Carousel Ball, the fund-raiser.."

Owen : "Yeah, that was wild ! That was ahh it was a great event, it was for a charity and everything .."

Jay : " Right, right, right.."

Owen : "..uum and Sting and Elton John were gonna play but then aahmm I guess Jerry Buss had some problems and he fainted."

Jay : "Passed out while I was on stage." [ Jay had been at the charity as well. ] [ mild laughter from the audience ]

Owen : "Yeah, well actually while, while ahh what's his name was singing with BB King.."

Jay : "That's right, Kelsey Gramer.."

Owen : "Kelsey Gramer.."

Jay : "I just introduced him and Kelsey Gramer had just came out on stage."

Owen : "...was singing a blues song he had to stop and the paramedics came in and thank God he's okay and [ audience laughs under their breath ] then aahm and then Elizabeth Taylor, then she, it was really a weird night, then she fainted kind of [ audience laughs softly ] or had to go back stage, it really, that really happened ! And then I left because it started to get so uncomfortable. [ audience laughs ] So I didn't even see like the last stuff."

Jay : ".. You were afraid you would be next ?" [ audience laughs ]

Owen : "I didn't know they would be dropping like flies ! [ audience laughing ] I didn't want to wait around and see !"

Jay : "Uh, do you go to many Hollywood parties ? You don't seem like a Hollywood party kind of guy."

Owen : "Yeeah, you know I - I'll go to some ahh I remember when I first got out here and aah you know how people tell ya, "Owen ya gotta be careful like about your car getting ripped off." And ahh, "You're in Los Angeles." And so I had a Club ( a large bright red wheel lock device that securely wraps around the steering wheel and it can't be turned without unlocking the device with a key to remove it from the steering wheel - helps to deter car thieves ) for my car and I went to this party with a friend and over the course of the night and it was kind of a good party and somehow I lost the key to the Club [ audience begins to laugh as does Jay ] but I still had my car keys and we get down to the car and.. you know we didn't have a lot of money and stuff when we first got out here and he's like, "Well you know it's kind of.." it was up on Franklin, we were trying to get down to Wilshire. And so it was like you know, it's almost a straight shot [ audience laughs ] if you like go - like ya just gotta make that one turn on Sunset there and then get on to Highland and if you open the car door while you're going, you could wrench the wheel to get it [ audience laughs ] like a right turn, kind of. [ Jay's laughing ] And so it was like late at night and I was like, "I think you're right, man ! We can do it !" [ audience laughs ] And aah and then we start - we didn't even make the first turn [ audience laughs ] that first turn on from Franklin on to Hollywood there. It couldn't make that turn there, so we had to leave to leave it on the curb.. [ audience is laughing ] and aah we got two wheels up on the curb and thank God the police didn't come and stuff and you know we went home and aah managed to retrieve it later with another key, yeah. [ Owen laughs at himself - the audience has been laughing all through this story]

Jay : "Now you're off to - you're going to Hawaii ?"

Owen : "Yeah, I'm going to aah, I'm going to Hawaii to aah, I'm going to be in a movie with Morgan Freeman and aah, I'm looking forward to that. He's someone that I think is great. And aah there's an element of surfing in the movie..

Jay : [ interrupting ] "Surfing movie with Morgan Freeman ? [ laughs ]" [ audience laughs ]

Owen : "Well, an "element" of surfing, that's why I said, "an element" ! And aahmm, and so so they're tryin' to get me into aah, tryin' to get me into shape and stuff so I'm looking forward.."

Jay : [ interrupting ] "You look like you're in shape, you're not in shape ? You look like.." [ a few female fans yell their approval of his physique ]

Owen : "Yeeaah, you know, I.. yeah [ feeling more and more embarrassed by the female verbal attention as he looks at his tummy] I just know from past experiences that I gotta take it seriously because on I did a movie called, "Anaconda", and I missed 43 out of my 47 work outs. "

Jay : "Really" [ audience laughs ]

Owen : " And I got down to the Amazon in Brazil and the director saw me without my shirt and he was like, "Well.. maybe you're one of those guys who just swims with your shirt on." [ audience laughs ] So in those scenes, I'm swimming with my shirt on and stuff. [ audience still laughing ]

Jay : "I mean are you lazy about physical activity by nature ?"

Owen : "I'm not a huge, you know, I don't really.."

Jay : "Don't want to move any more than you have to.."

Owen : "I always had a weird feeling at the gym everyone kind of lifting weights and kind of - it makes me kind of uncomfortable."

Jay : "Yeah." [ audience laughs ]

Owen : "But yeah I'll get out there and run on the beach and stuff - that's a little bit more - traditional."

Jay : " Yeah, now, now how's your brother, Luke doing ? He was here now a while ago."

Owen : "He's doin' good !"

Jay : "Yeah, yeah"

Owen : "Thank you."

Jay : "You guys were here together the first time, you remember that ?"

Owen : "Yes, I sure do, you compared us to Bartles and James - [ audience laughs ] were these kind of country bumpkins kind of and Luke and I were like - having to laugh kind of, but it was like [ he laughs uncomfortably ]

Jay : "You, you sound bitter ! Were you bitter ? Were, were you mad at me ?"

Owen : "Well, we were kind of talking about it afterwards, like you know, you don't like to think of yourself - we were pretty young and Bartles and James, these two, these two old timers kind of who pitch lemonade ( wine coolers ) [ audience laughs ] Aaah, so aahh... [ Jay's laughing under his breath trying to keep it positive ]

Jay : "So you, so you carried that anger to this point !"

Owen : "Aah, I didn't forget it !"

Jay : "Wow ! [ audience laughs ] That's amazing ! So you mean so I..."

Owen : "I was even talking to Luke saying like, [ says bitterly with a tiny bit of humor ] "Yeah that's sort of like the club." he goes, "Jay will probably say that you guys - were you wearing straw hats and overalls ?" [ audience laughs ]

Jay : "Wow ! So you were scarred ! Your first - I scarred you for life !"

Owen : "Yeah, you did."

Jay : "Well I certainly apologize. [ he said that like he meant it while keeping it upbeat ] I had no idea.

Owen : "That's okay."

Jay : "But see, it gave you the impetus to become huge stars."

Owen : "That's right, well uum I don't know about that, but.." [ audience laughs ]

Jay : "Yeah, yeah, but this movie is anyway, it's "I Spy", it opens on the 1st. [ audience cheers ] Owen, a pleasure ! Please come back and see us again ! "

Owen : "Thank you, I will !"
